Effect of Resveratrol on Proliferation and Telomerase Activity
of Human Colon Cancer Cells in Vitro

A number of studies performed in our laboratory and elsewhere, showed that resveratrol is able to prevent carcinogenesis and to impair tumor growth and progression. In order to provide additional information on the pleiotropic effects of resveratrol on malignant cells, the present study was performed to test the in vitro influence of the compound on the growth and TLMA of HT-29 and WiDr human colon cancer cells lines. The results confirmed that resveratrol has a direct dose dependent inhibitory effect on cell proliferation in both lines. In addition, for the first time, relatively hogh concentrations of this compound were found to be able to substantially down-regulate telomerase activity. These preliminary results further support the potential role of resveratrol in chemoprevention / chemotherapy of human colon tumor cells and provide the rational basis for novel strategies in cancer control.

The Science of Healthy Aging:
Living Better, Not Just Longer

Ellen Hughes, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine; Former Director of Education, Osher Center for Integrative Medicine discusses healthy living and aging. Series: UCSF Mini Medical School for the Public [2/2010]

Aging is a continuous process resulting from the accumulation of little random changes affecting structural and functional elements within the body. At a molecular level, damages accumulate with time on DNA, proteins and lipids as they overcome the intrinsic repair mechanisms of the body. This build-up of molecular changes eventually affects physiological processes leading to the point where it may even compromise the general homeostasis of the body. As a consequence, we tend to become more vulnerable to environmental stress and age-related diseases as we grow old. Anti-aging is also associated with a reversal of the slower metabolism, a decrease in the number of active cells and an increase in their mutation rate.
